Title: John Wilkins
Title: Natural classification in the sciences: Homology and analogy as
general aspects of inference
Abstract: Classification in science has been treated as a matter solely of
convention without much epistemic importance. In this talk I will argue
that classification by homology is a way of providing a "straight rule" for
inductive projectibility, so long as homology is understood to be an
identity relation rather than a similarity relation between classes. The
Tversky account of similarity will be explored as the foundation for
analogical reasoning in science. Analogy will be seen as a nonampliative
basis for reasoning, while homology is an ampliative form. I shall also
comment upon Sober's "modus Darwin": Similarity ergo common ancestry.
Although homology and (this sense of) analogy are biological concepts, I
believe this generalises to all sciences.
