USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-in-Progress Seminar

Isabelle Baker: 'To what extent does proximity determine our moral responsibility for others?'

ABSTRACT: Renowned ethicist, Peter Singer, claims that physical proximity should not matter morally to our duty to assist the distant needy in the ‘Third World’. This talk is an exploration of why, in fact, proximity does matter, at least to some extent, to our sense of moral responsibility for others. Some initial intuitive reactions are assessed to support this point. However, with these in mind, some normative questions arise: just because proximity does seem to matter, is it a correct measure that we should use to draw our moral boundaries? Or, as Singer suggests, do we have equal moral obligations towards those who are proximal and those who are distant? The views of some political philosophers, such as Iris Marion Young, David Miller and John Rawls will be discussed in order to shed light on these questions.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
