Title: PG WIP: Benjamin Bramble
USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-in-Progress Seminar
Ben Bramble: 'Meaning in Life and the Inevitability of Death'.
ABSTRACT: What is it for one's life to be meaningful or worth living?
According to Fulfillment Theories, it is for one to be fulfilled in it.
According to Consequentialism, it is for one to be suitably connected to
good things (e.g., by contributing to them). According to Wolf's Hybrid
View, it is for one to be fulfilled in it and suitably connected to good
things, where one's fulfillment and connection to good things are
themselves suitably connected. In this paper, I argue against these
theories, and in favour of my own, according to which for one's life to be
meaningful is for one to be either suitably connected to good things, or
fulfilled in the right kind of way.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
If you would like to present or require further information, please contact
Nick Malpas at [email protected]
The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of
discussion. Since the primary aim of this seminar is to generate
discussion, presentations need not be particularly polished or formal.
