Subject: RE AUSTRALASIAN PHILOSOTHON TO BE HELD IN SYDNEY
To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]>

I am writing to see if SydPhil members might be interested in being
involved in the upcoming national Philsothon which is going to be held
in Sydney in July.

Professor Nick Smith from Macquarie University recently wrote about
Philosothons;  "The event was an inspiring model of how to engage in
constructive, cooperative inquiry. Indeed, in all my years in Higher
Education I have hardly ever witnessed such an engaging and
inspirational series of philosophical discussions – and from
schoolchildren!"

Professor Greg Restall from Melbourne University wrote about a
Philosothon held in Melbourne last year; "This was a remarkably
refreshing and encouraging occasion, seeing students displaying the
skills in cooperative inquiry, critical and creative thinking that
they have learned in their schools, and working together to come to a
new understanding of these deep issues. I was impressed most not only
by the skills and understanding that the students brought to the
event, but by the constructive attitudes they showed. The students
modelled the kind of respectful and engaged discussion which is so
important, but often missing, in our world today."

Over the past three years interschool Philosothons have grown in
number in each state of Australia to the point where for the first
time there will be a national Philosothon held in Sydney between July
11th & 13th 2011. The Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools
Associations (FAPSA) is hosting the event at Cranbrook School and
Ascham College in Bellevue Hill. Twelve winning schools from 2010 have
accepted the invitation to send their best and brightest Philosophers
to Sydney over the three days to participate in Philosophical
Communities of Inquiry on a variety of topics.

The 12 schools participating in this event are;

   * AB Paterson College QLD
   * Anglican Church Grammar School QLD
   * Ascham School NSW
   * Ballarat Grammar School VIC
   * Christ Church Grammar School WA
   * Cranbrook School NSW
   * Hale School Perth WA
   * McKinnon Secondary College VIC
   * Perth College WA
   * St Laurence’s College QLD
   * St Andrew’s Cathedral School VIC
   * Tangara School NSW

We are writing to enlist some assistance from SydPhil members to
provide some judges for this event. We have invited Phd Philosophy
students to be involved in facilitating the discussions. The judges
role would be to award scores to individual students on the basis of
their skills in philosophical discourse. I have attached to this email
further details about what is involved.  We are looking for people to
be available for one, two or three discussions over either of the
following two days. (or both) Please email us back ASAP if any of you
are able to help out;

Monday  11th July at 8pm - 9pm
Tuesday 12th July at 10am - 10.30pm
Tuesday 12th July at 11am - 12pm
Tuesday 13th July at  12pm - 1pm

Tuesday 13th July at 7pm - 8pm
Tuesday 13th July at 8pm - 9pm

We will provide you with lunch and or dinner if required and more
information can be found about the National Philosothon at

warm regards
