Title: “Assertions as Answers: Generating a Theory of Presupposition”.
Abstract:
Presupposition has been an important topic in the philosophical
understanding of language since Frege first raised it as an issue.
Unfortunately debates about the presuppositions of sentences and the
consequences of their failure all too quickly ends in a clash of
intuitions. I propose a new start taking seriously the idea that uses of
sentences in assertions are actions. Some general features of action and in
particular deliberation involved in action allow us to predict
presupposition-like phenomena with startlingly different properties from
those typically associated with presuppositions. Yet these properties seem
to explain the features for which presuppositions were introduced to
explain.
