Title: Anik Waldow
Self-reliance and other-dependence. Humean reflections on pride and shame
Abstract
Our dependence on other persons has often been regarded as an ill that must
be rooted out for its undermining effects on autonomous agency. This essay
will challenge the conception of other-dependence as an obstacle to
autonomy, arguing that our capacity for autonomous agency is intimately
related to and grounded in our natural openness to other persons’ opinions.
By examining Hume’s account of pride and shame, I will propose that healthy
self-esteem must be regarded as a species of pride that, while enabling
autonomous agency in the first place, requires for its fixation and
maintenance our engagement with the evaluations of our social environment.
Pride proper will here be conceived not merely as an attitude that helps us
to control autonomy-undermining consequences of our susceptibility to
others, as it is commonly claimed, but, more importantly, as a capacity
that removes from us the need to deploy self-protective strategies that
immunise us against criticism. This immunisation, it will be argued, is
self-defeating, because it enhances a mistaken conception of self that
renders agents incapable of positively dealing with their weaknesses. The
aim of pointing to these negative consequence of our failure to connect
with other persons’ evaluations of us is to stress the crucial importance
of maintaining one’s susceptibility to others even after the formation of
pride proper that, in and of itself, helps agents to become more
self-reliant. Considering this interconnectedness between self-reliance and
other-dependence, our natural susceptibility to the evaluations of other
persons will finally emerge as a sine qua non for autonomous agency.
