Hi, Fancy speaking to actual normal people (i.e. non-academics) about your fascinating research project/passionate side project/novelty issue?
Socrates Cafe <http://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Socrates-Cafe/>, a Sydney-based philosophy discussion group with over 1000 members, is making another call-out for speakers. The format is straight forward: a 30 minute talk on a philosophy topic of your choice delivered to a passionate and intelligent non-academic audience in an inner west cafe, followed by a group discussion where you'll wander around chatting to people and answering questions. It's like a casual seminar/tutorial, except with no marking. The invitation is open to all academics or graduate students interested in spreading your ideas beyond the walls of academia to the broader public. Topics are yours to choose - although the Socrates Cafe community has been specifically asking for someone to speak about paradoxes and the philosophy of humour (not necessarily in the same talk...), so if you're hot on either of these issues, please do let me know. Meetings are typically held on the second or third Wednesday of the month at Berkelouw Books in Newtown. If you're interested, please contact me and let me know when you might be available and I'll slot you in. Cheers, Tim Dean
