WORDS AND IDEAS [by David Tribe] deals with philosophical ideas and
practical consequences arising from words, widely bandied about in humanist,
religious and political circles as well as academia. Consideration of them
produces a history of Western Philosophy, from classical materialism to
postmodernism, revealed in diverse social settings. Because these settings
constantly evolve, when archetypal words crop up at different times they
have slightly different meanings. Though, like Humpty Dumpty in Lewis
Carroll's THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, we have a natural tendency to use words
subjectively, we have a social responsibility to adhere as closely as
possible to accepted meanings in the hope that disagreements and conflicts
can be minimized.
