USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-in-Progress Seminar
Alison Fernandes: 'Reliable Fly-Swatting and the Direction of Causation'
ABSTRACT: David Albert presents a program for explaining various
asymmetries in time, including why some physical processes go in only one
direction and why it seems to us we can influence the future but not the
past. Albert argues that although we can influence the past, in these cases
the influence cannot be used to our advantage: either we cannot know of the
influence, or we can get the same benefit without the influence. I will
argue that there is a third type of case left out: cases where we reliably
respond to a situation and so our own actions can be read as records of the
past. I will argue that such cases do allow us to influence the past, but
attempting to use this influence destroys the correlation on which it is
based.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
If you would like to present or require further information, please contact
Nick Malpas at [email protected]
The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of
discussion. Since the primary aim of this seminar is to generate
discussion, presentations need not be particularly polished or formal.
