Maqcquarie Philosophy Research Seminar All Welcome. Fri 19 August 2011
1.30pm-3.30pm W6A Rm 708 Adrian Heathcote (Sydney) The Origin of Metaphysics Abstract The purpose of this paper is to argue that metaphysics, as it is understood in Western Philosophy, had a definite beginning point with a specific discovery in Greece in the 6th Century BC. This discovery launched speculative philosophy as an enterprise, entirely different than the 'guide to life' philosophies that existed before and after. Moreover it offered a unified, coherent view of reality that encompassed eschatological religion, aesthetics, ethics and social and political philosophy. -- Jeanette Kennett Professor of Moral Psychology Cognitive Science CORE Department of Philosophy Macquarie University NSW 2109 _______________________________________________ SydPhil mailing list: http://sydphil.info 1000 subscribers now served!!
