Centered Communication
Abstract: There is a clash between an attractive account of belief and an
appealing model of communication. We have good reason to think that our
beliefs have centered (i.e. self-locating) content. According to a natural
picture of communication, we make utterances to express our beliefs and
share them with our hearers. However, the account of belief is in conflict
with the conception of communication. The standard reaction to this problem
has been to abandon the centered belief account. I want to suggest a
different response. I am going to present an alternative account of
communication, the Recentering model, that allows us to hold on to the
centered belief account and preserves a central intuition of the initial
model of communication.
