September 6: Bronwyn Hanna discusses Ethics and Religion in Schools

Since the beginning of this year , NSW has been running ethics classes in primary schools. They have created much controversy, and opposition from religious groups , in that ethics classes were seen to bypass religious instruction. The threat of the Rev. Fred Nile and the Christian Democrats to withdraw support for the government unless the ethics classes were not offered in competition with religious instruction is evidence of some of the difficulties the classes have faced.

Dr. Bronwyn Hanna has been teaching the ethics class in an Inner West public school since the beginning of this year. Bronwyn is the mother of one of the boys in her class. She will give her viewpoint on why she supports the classes and the benefits they bring She will explain the program, the alternatives that were available, her experiences , and in particular she will present her evaluation of the achievements and mishaps so far.

Bronwyn holds a PhD in Australian architectural history from the Faculty of the Built Environment at UNSW. She works with the State Government's Heritage Branch.
