Title: Cord Friebe
Temporal Existence and Indeterminism
The view that the future is ‘open’, i.e. ontologically indetermined,
distinguishes apparently the present time by being the edge of being. For a
long time, the (in)compatibility of relativity with presentism (or growing
block) and with ontological indeterminism was even considered to be one and
the same problem. Meanwhile, however, the predominant view is that with a
reductive understanding of natural laws (Humean metaphysics) indeterminism
is rather compatible with eternalism. But, perhaps, one wants to be a
non-Humean, and then the questions arise: How is a realistic understanding
of natural laws (metaphysics of powers) related to the block universe view?
Could an indeterministic universe in that sense be ‘eternal’? Or would such
a universe be dynamic even if the laws were deterministic?
