In accordance with the standard interpretation, a physical theory is time-reversal invariant just in case, for every sequence of states which is compatible with its laws, the sequence obtained by reversing the order of the images of those states as of an appropriate time-reversal operator is also compatible with those laws. Time-reversal invariant theories are usually taken to be insensitive to the chosen orientation of time, and hence to carry positive evidence in favor of the symmetry of time itself. Moving from some recent results in dynamical systems theory, I offer a critical examination of time-reversal invariance, as just defined. In particular, I show that its meaning varies depending on the algebraic structure which is chosen to model physical time and that, as a consequence, time-reversal invariant theories become insensitive to the chosen orientation of time just in case the assumed time model is a commutative group. Commutative groups, on the other hand, are themselves highly symmetric structures. In consequence, the usual understanding of time-reversal invariance becomes exposed to some major drawbacks.
