Title: Gregory Strom
Agent-Centred Restrictions, the Imagination and Rational Growth

Abstract:

Many philosophers hope that we can shed important light on the conceptual space determined by philosophical debates about the nature of moral restrictions on our conduct by distinguishing philosophical positions that are committed to the existence of agent-centred moral restrictions from those that are not. I argue that an insufficiently appreciated difficulty about how to specify criteria of identity for restrictions on our conduct undermines that hope. Appreciating this difficulty obliges us to appreciate as well a special role that the imagination plays in the etiology of an ethically excellent action. I suggest this result enables us to isolate a domain of rational conduct not best understood on the model of the interaction between perceptual and agentive rationality that has dominated philosophy since Descartes, but rather on the model of nutrition and growth. The isolation of this vegetative rational domain should be welcome news for virtue ethicists, who wish somehow to maintain that morality requires more of us than merely that we act in conformity to its requirements.
