Abstract: Historians have long shown that the nineteenth-century picture of science and religion locked in bloody warfare is a caricature of the truth. Science has depended on religion as often as it has challenged it. Nevertheless, it is surely true that, bit by bit, science has encroached on religious claims. Six days of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah’s Flood – all have gone or had to be modified dramatically in face of science. With the success of science, miracles and other supposed signs of the supernatural seem less and less plausible. With the rise of the social sciences, biblical views about women and gays and others are found wanting. Are we now at the point where science has completely displaced religion, or is there still place for a full-throated faith? And if the latter, what would it be and why would it be? This talk tackles these central questions in the science-religion debate.
