The first session Verdi and the Eternal Feminine in La Traviata is coming up
Saturday Oct 19 from 12.00-4.00
At WEA on 72 Bathurst Street behind Town Hall station. Tel 9264 2781. Cost $84
for both 4 hour sessions (also concessions available).

Philosopher Matthew Del Nevo will be looking at a performance of La Traviata in
which, he will seek to show, Tantric ideals of sexual complementarity and
difference are demonstrated in sound and expression. Matthew will also
explain, as he works through the opera, how these Tantric ideas that we hear
correspond with love notions/potions in the Western troubadour tradition of
Catholic Europe, the tradition of Courtly Love, when a new definition of love
was formed in the West for the first time. In the East this love is pictured as
a Mandala. In his considerations Jacques Lacan considers Courtly Love as
anamorphosis. Matthew wonders about the status of this difference in culture.
