Dear All,
This week’s SHAPE seminar will be by Assoc Prof Goetz Richter (Conservatorium
of Music) who will present a talk titled "Music and the Contemplation of the
Imagination: Origins of a Philosophy of Music in the early 19th Century"

Abstract:
The philosophy of music of the early 19th century Viennese musician and music
critic E. Hanslick has received much attention over recent years - variously
from musicologists but also from contemporary philosophers (Kivy, Zangwill et
al.). This talk will explore the philosophical origins of Hanslick's thougts,
especially in looking at the aesthetics of music which may have influenced him
(Hand, Schubart, Naegeli, Hegel, etc) and in considering Hanslick's
understanding that music involves the contemplation of the imagination
("Nachdenken der Phantasie"). What is meant here by "contemplation" and
"imagination"?
