Dear All, Christine Winter has joined History/SOPHI as an ARC Future Fellow affiliated with REGS, Warwick Anderson's Laureate Fellowship programme. Her research project is entitled: German Mixed-Race Diasporas in the Southern Hemisphere: Science, Politics and Identity Transformation. It continues her interest in 'race' and scientific knowledge production; the legacies of German colonial rule in the South West Pacific; in the transformation of identity and migration. For mixed-race Germans in the twentieth century, race was always an arbitrary signifier, relying on moral and emotional judgements to complete negotiations around identity. This enabled a measure of personal agency in the creation and subversion of racial status and manipulation of real and imagined connections to Germany. Her interests span 19th and 20th century European and Pacific History, the German Diaspora, the legacies of Colonialism and the influence of Humanitarianism, as well as the science and politics of 'race'. Christine completed her PhD at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU in 2005, and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney.
