Secularism has been limited to the separation of government and the independence of legislation from the undue influence of religious dogma, institutions, leaders and dignitaries. However, the undue influence from ideological and economic institutions have had a more influential role in more recent times. Many discussions have been unfortunately, reduced to knee jerk reactions, labelling and choosing between a pass or rejection of policy rather than arriving at better solutions based on careful deliberation. Furthermore, lobbyists have become so powerful that they end up doing the research instead of the legislators and regulators as well as the drumming up of support through grants to the academe and pressures on media through revenue streams and their outright ownership. This talk aims to extend the concept of secularism to freedom from economic dogma and vested interests that -- in the same way religious dogma and vested interests were -- may be inimical to the endeavour for the best solutions, risk management measures and systems of governance.
