Recipients of this network may be interested in a just-published book In the
Public Interest. It is on encouraging whistleblowing. The book draws on
practices in Australia, the UK and the US, documenting the considerable
evidence that blowing the whistle does stop wrongdoing. The practice faces
many problems, including the wrath that descends on the whistleblower, and
the widespread belief that “dobbing” is wrong. Governments world-wide are
therefore increasingly adopting programs to protect whistleblower from
retaliation, as well as ensure that action is taken on their disclosures.

The book argues that a high priority in the teaching of these protections
will lead to increased ethical behaviour in business and government. Also
that much additional research is needed.
