A reminder that abstract submissions for the Journal of Continental Philosophy’s symposium on plants and philosophy closes in 10 days.
If you intend to submit an abstract, please email [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> by October 18, 2024. Call for Papers Plants are the most abundant life-form on the planet. They account for approximately eighty percent of the total biomass on Earth—drastically overshadowing the biomass of all animal life. Yet, despite their abundance in the world, for much of the history of philosophy plants have tended to be relegated to the margins of thought. In recent years, attempts have been made to rectify this oversight on all sides of the philosophical spectrum. Within the Continental tradition, several important works have been written over the last two decades spanning topics as diverse as the question of the garden and the way human beings interact with and care for the vegetal world; to accounts of plant being and critiques of zoological categories; to the biopolitics of plant life, and even accounts of vegetal imagery in the works of philosophers like Kant, Hegel, Deleuze, and Derrida, amongst others. In light of the growing effort to think about plants, the Journal of Continental Philosophy invites submissions for a symposium on plant life, which will be published as part of Issue 6.1. We welcome submissions attempting to explore notions of vegetal life or vegetal imagery in the history of philosophy, as well as Continental approaches to questions concerning: * The relationship between human beings and plant life. * The ethical and/or political implications of activities like seed patenting. * The built environment and the loss of green spaces. * Plant care and/or gardening as a kind of philosophical practice. Contributions may take the form of scholarly articles, translations, interviews, round table discussions, and literary works. Submission Dates Abstracts: October 18, 2024 Full manuscripts: January 10, 2025 General Guidelines for Authors 1. All submissions should be double line spaced (including notes and references) and use Times New Roman 12-point font. 2. Full manuscript submissions should be prepared ready for anonymous peer-review. 3. Manuscripts must include a title and abstract. 4. Manuscripts must use Chicago 'Notes and Bibliography'. 5. Submissions should not have been previously published or under review for publication elsewhere. 6. Submissions should be submitted as a .docx, .doc, or .rtf file.
