ABSTRACT: Historians of Jewish philosophy tend to trace its emergence in the
Islamic world in the 9th-10th centuries, through the figure of Moses Maimonides
(1138-1204; Spain, North Africa and Egypt), and then to explore the Maimonidean
controversies and the flourishing of philosophical activity among the Jews of
Western Christendom. Absent from most treatments is the period of roughly three
centuries from Moses Maimonides until the Spanish Expulsion of 1492 in Islamic
lands. In this seminar, we will explore the reasons for this lacuna and some
salient features of this intellectual milieu, with a focus on three examples:
Tanhum b. Joseph ha-Yerushalmi (d.1291), David b. Joshua Maimonides (d.c.
1415), and a fascinating commentary on the philosophical chapters of Moses
Maimonides' Mishneh Torah authored in the late 14th century.
