basically is a helper for ordering messages, instead of "sort by
name", "sort by date", etc, but have the great capability to
put the messages that are important to us in the top/bottom and
all near, and leave other, less important (and SPAM!!) on a less
important place
this helps alot busy mailing list or heavy email load, as with
a quick check you can see the most important messages and leave
the others for later
even if you dont sort by score, it can be very usefull to hide
unimportant messages or spam and move/backup older and/or
unimportant messages on other folders and leave the "main"
folder with the more relevant messages
its just like the filter, but instead of a action it gives/takes
a score from the message (configure claws to show the score column
so you better understand)
for exemple i have this score filter:
age_greater 7 score -1
this will take out one point from the score when a message is
older than a week
make some more global rules like this for more or less timeframe
and you are emulating the sort by date
for this exemple lets say you are this
age_greater 14 score -1
age_greater 21 score -1
age_greater 28 score -1
age_greater 35 score -1
now put something like this
replied score 5
this will give a bonus score of 5 to every message you replied
(so if you replied, must be more important than others)
now a message not replied with a month (30 days) old will have a
score of -4, but a as old replied message will have a score of 1
(0-4+5), and a recent replied message will have a score of 5
now add this one:
inreplyto regexpcase ".*your_username@your_email_server" score 3
now every reply to your posts will get too a bonus of 3 point
you can also add the same "references" regexp search, it will
allow changing the score of all the thread after you had made a
post
now another one:
subject regexpcase "sex|xxx|porn|penis|Money for|Free password" score
-10
now you lower the score for several spam subjects, but who says
spam can say annoying newbies or useless discussions (like OT:),
increase the score for people that usually do smart posts, scan
for some keywords in the headers or body that are important for
you, etc
please note that a regexp with several searchs is alot faster than
several search filters with only one search keyword
new | unread score 1
this one is usually important too, give a higher score for those
message that you didnt read yet
with some well tunned global and folder score filter rules you
can have a system that could allow a fast read of busy mailing
lists or newsgroups or with a very high noise ratio
you can set a kill score that below that score the messages are
hidden from sight
now remember, scoring is very powerfull, a good set of rules will
be heaven, but a bad set of rules can make you miss some very
important posts, so be carefull with the rules you make
have fun
