Few time ago, i had a talk with Guilherme Blanco, regarding a native class method to export a nested set collection to a hierarchical php array. He wrote a piece of code, telling me it could eventually be commited in the future. I've just checked the doctrine 1.2 alpha 2 sources, and it's not seems to be there.
As this kind of feature could really be a sql connection killer (with many many queries) being bad coded, i think doctrine dev team should have a look and implement it in the right way.
