One of the best books I've read on php programming is:

"PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice"
http://www.amazon.com/PHP-Objects-Patterns-Practice-Second/dp/1590599098/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270063174&sr=8-1

This was before I discovered symfony, and all the while I thought
"Wow, this is awesome, I wonder how to put this all together"... and
then I found symfony, which already put it all together. Never looked
back after that :)
