I still think the default should be improved, but I am persuaded that theming is straightforward and can apply globally to all of the forms that aren't going out of their way to be themed to the contrary in all of the bundles in your project.
So if I think there's a better way, I can write a bundle and document the handful of lines needed to enable it, and if it's really that good, it will wind up like sfGuard is today - a quasi-standard feature.
