The Symfony 1.4 "end of maintenance" date is coming up in November. That

I'd like to ask for some clarification on exactly what will be ending in
November when the last 1.x-series release of Symfony reaches its "end of
maintenance" date.
For previous releases quite a lot has remained available, but this is
the first time the entire 1.x series (everything on symfony-project.org)
has been beyond its "end of maintenance" at the same time.
Some concrete questions:
* Will the svn repository stay online?
Yes
* Will the plugin repository and website stay online?
Yes
* Will the documentation stay online?
Yes
* If there are parties willing to be part of a "community support"
effort, can they be given the necessary access to the above to make
maintenance releases?
I can still make maintenance releases beyond the EOL date if people are
willing to help.
I'm still actively monitoring the tickets, but frankly, we don't have
that many bugs that need to be fixed as part of the maintenance. Many
problems are just not fixable without introducing some kind of BC
breaks. I had to revert some changes in the last few months because so
many people are relying on the current behavior, even if it is not
necessarily the good/expected one. So, the main focus will probably be
to support the newer PHP versions and fix the occasional bugs. One
release every 6 months would probably be enough.
* Alternatively, should those with a need to support Symfony 1.4 in the
future be setting up mirrors of the above and creating a new "community
version" repository?
No, I don't think it would make sense. Actually, and Symfony2 is totally
different in this regard, nobody has never really contributed for a long
period of time on symfony1. So, I don't think that another community
version will ever happen. Let's try to continue to do a collaborative work.
I'd like to help ensure a smooth transition so folks still maintaining
older client projects (which includes Sensio, surely...) can answer
client concerns about the "end of maintenance date" responsibly while
continuing to promote Symfony 2 for new work.
Sensio has less and less symfony1 projects. I'm not even sure we still
have major projects on symfony1 anymore.
Honestly, I would have loved to see some clients ask for paid support at
some point. If clients want to keep maintaining their apps beyond the
end of life of a free product, they should be able to pay for some kind
of support.
After getting more input from the community, I will probably write a
blog post about that too.
Fabien
Thanks!
