I would like to add to this conversation that it would be good to allow relative paths for environments that have a different root dir on app (web) and console (cli). Our hosting partner provides different servers for SSH and WWW. The root of the server is different on both servers (/site/www in SSH and /data/sites/web/<domain>/www on WWW). This means that things like cache:clear warmup don't work how they should. I can also imagine that chrooted apache2/nginx setups have the same problem.
