I just thought i'd post up about my new websites. They're not amazing in any way but as I'm not a coder - I'm actually an antiques dealer - its proof that even total amateurs can make sites with symfony....

I had a relatively expensive website built in 1998 but quickly found that it just didn't offer the flexibility I needed and it did terribly in the search engines. In 2004, I thought it was time to have another go and I decided that I should try to code it myself. I did my research and chose php. My first site was coded using various pear libraries, including DB and DB_dataobjects. I tried to use an object orientated approach (i'd read PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice by Matt Zandstra) but my code was very messy. About a year ago I decided to try again and after doing some more research, I discovered symfony. I slowly started playing with it and began coding my new site in earnest about 6 months ago. By this point I had bought a second antiques shop and as both shops sold very similar goods, I wanted to reuse as much code as possible between the two sites. I decided to use the excellent sfDimensions plugin, which allowed me to have a shared backend and to use mostly templates to create two distinct looking frontends. I'm not sure how many hours I spent in total because I simply coded when my shop was quiet, but I'm sure that symfony made things much faster for me as well as helping me to code in a much more flexible and structured way. For the next stage... I haven't used any caching yet. My plan is to tidy up and refactor my code as much as possible and then investigate using caching to speed things up a touch.
