Uh, as far as I know, they don't get resized, just displayed smaller.
So your images:

* Still take as long to transfer
* Cost you the same in bandwidth costs
* Go towards the maximum amount of cache the browser is allowed
   (very important for mobile browsers)

They just look smaller on the screen is all.
