Thanks Jeremy for this detailed explanation :)
Sorry for my late answer, I just had time to focus on this issue again. First of all, I read the Security User Guide <http://symfony.com/doc/2.0/book/security/users.html#doctrine-entity-provider> several times, which helped me a lot to understand how the security issue is handled and once more I am very glad that the FOS Bundle takes care of this! :)

I recognized there is already a findUserByUsernameOrEmail() method in FOS\UserBundle\Model\UserManager.. so I created my own UserManager, extending the one from FOS\Documents and added the parameter to my config.yml to load it ( http://pastebin.com/QMs1tJ13), but I always get this Exception:

Fatal error: Declaration of Application\UserBundle\Document\UserManager::loadUser() must be compatible with that of Symfony\Component\Security\Core\User\UserProviderInterface::loadUser() in...

Maybe its already too late and I'm just blind or something but I can't see why loadUser is incompatible..

You probably missed a use statement somewhere
