Global assumptions would be useful as a complement (I think Maple has  
both). Since
var already does some hacks, var('x y z', real=True) could set global  
assumptions for
interactive use.

>      assert sqrt(x**2).refine(Assume(x, "real")) = abs(x)

In many cases the syntax can be a little simpler, e.g. f.refine(x > 0).
