Don't you think you could even use 'is' instead of '=='? For things like

if arg.func == asinh: ...

it makes sense in my opinion. This could really speed up the core. A  
disadvantage is
that it is no longer possible to use user-defined core functions (without  
using
isinstance), but I don't see a reason to do this anyway.
