I am +0 on both patches (e.g. one argument for isinstance() is that it is  
easy for
the new user to use it, since it's pythonic, while .func is sympy specific).
But if this makes things easier for you (or some other patches), let's put  
it in. I
don't have an opinion on "==" vs "is".
