I agree with you, Ondrej, operators are a much cleaner solution in the long  
run.
Plus, support for operators would be useful in many branches of Physics and  
Engineering.

I suspect that my use-case for derivative printing is somewhat  
idiosyncratic -- so it
may be best just to leave the patch here for those who want/need that  
functionality
and wait for operators to arrive.
