I don't know why that one doesn't work, when separatevars can do it.  That  
is another issue (issue 1767).

I agree to put an assumptions argument in power_base.  expand(log=True)  
also has assumptions problems, but
it you fix them, it breaks the integrator.

I think the problem with ODEs is that if you have an ODE, you don't  
necessarily know right off how the domain of
the solution will need to be restricted in order for it to be correct.  So  
it isn't just a simple matter of changing
the assumptions on the variables to make it work, in the general case.
