Yes, I think expand should definitely return x*y*x*y*x*y. That is the whole purpose of expand().

However, this already seems to be fixed in Chris's 1766 branch.

In [1]: x = Symbol('x', commutative=False)

In [2]: y = Symbol('y', commutative=False)

In [3]: ((x*y)**3).expand()
Out[3]: x⋅y⋅x⋅y⋅x⋅y
