What is described in comment #4 is what I would also expect. I am currently working on the patch for documenting the actual behavior but would vote for #4 behavior as it feels more natural to me (I have not used Maple or Mathematica so far). If Maple a reference for SymPy, this should be documented or for the case it is already documented at a more prominent place.
