I don't have a strong opinion about this and I don't like both variants. I slightly prefer sum_(), but in the end it is not that important. It's fine either way if you know it, I think the main problem is confusion for newcomers.
Maybe we should add to the docs that 'from sympy import *' overwrites the built-in sum.
