Whether the current behaviour is correct or not is really unrelated to commutativity. There are commutative objects for which it's wrong (e.g. polynomials) and noncommutative ones for which it's valid (positive definite symmetric matrices, for instance). So what's suggested here is a hack (but algebraic substitution is already a tangle of hacks, so...)
