@Alexey: This is only indirectly related to issue 1688. It just clarifies the current code without changing the internal design, which probably helps towards finding a good solution for 1688.
What you discuss is actually relevant to issue 1688, not to this one. Clarifying problems, creating a wiki page, etc. would certainly help a lot. I won't really have time to do it myself until the 0.7.0 release.
