If the expression only has one variable in it, it can guess to integrate with respect to it. But if the expression has two or more variables in it, it can't know which one to integrate with respect to. In this case, it doesn't know if it should integrate with respect to x or with respect to k, so it fails. Your best bet is to always specify the variable of integration.
