As an update, I've not used Cython before SymPy, so didn't know much about it. My distro version of Cython is at 0.12.1, but I just realized I could easy_install the most recent version. Updating to Cython 0.15.1 indeed appears to solve my particular issue.
For reference, my distro version of Python is 2.6, but I've installed Python 2.7 in /usr/local which is what is used here.
