test_issue_3022 behaves erratically on my computer Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64

./bin/test test_expand.py runs most of the times in 0.5 seconds,
the rest of the times it runs in 20 seconds or more, sometimes it uses all
my memory
and I kill the process.
