One argument for is when rewrite functions return Integrals or Sums, which necessarily are in terms of Dummy variables. In this case, testing them is not easy. See for example .https://github.com/raoulb/sympy/commit/1e73aec3f9f24aae389dc6ab8b4a596a1a580285
