I didn't realize that it was defined the other way. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characteristic_polynomial, the other way is the characteristic equation. The advantage over the way we currently do it is that the polynomial is always monic, and the advantage of the other way is that the constant term is always det(A). But it seems arbitrary otherwise, and so since we already do it one way, let's just stick with it.
