My internet is messed up right now and I don't have the python-dev package so I cannot build line profiler right now. But using %time on ipython, I don't think that pow(b, 2, n) makes any difference. I tested for the prime 2**1279 - 1 and got exactly the same results for using pow(b, 2, n) against using (b**2)%n.
