I don't see the difference now:
sx = sqrt(x+z).series(z,0,1)
sxy = sqrt(x+y+z).series(z,0,1)
s1=sx.subs(x,x+y)
s2=sxy
s1.expand().removeO().simplify()
sqrt(x + y)
s2.expand().removeO().simplify()
sqrt(x + y)
@smichr's example:
sx = sqrt(x+z).series(z,0,1)
sxy = sqrt(x+y+z).series(z,0,1)
sxy.subs({x:1,y:2})
sqrt(3)*(z**3/432 - z**2/72 + z/6 + 1) + O(z)
sx.subs(x,3)
sqrt(3)*(z**3/432 - z**2/72 + z/6 + 1) + O(z)
