Indeed:
In [2]: b = x - log(tanh(x) + 1)
In [3]: a = -x-log(tanh(x)-1)
In [4]: a.diff(x).simplify()
Out[4]: tanh(x)
In [5]: b.diff(x).simplify()
Out[5]: tanh(x)
And I was able to reproduce the nondeterminism in master
